The Job
This South Caroling compaction grouting project is located in Columbia. It is part of the Columbia resilient water project, which is focused on ensuring a sustainable, resilient raw water supply for the city. As part of the project, contractors installed a new bridge over the Columbia canal to support a raw water intake. During installation of the bridge caisson shafts, there were concerns that spoils volume exceeded the caisson volume.

The Challenge
The work had to be done in a way that did not introduce grout to the adjacent canal. It also had to satisfy various regulators, including FERC. Extensive overhead electrical lines also complicated work, with a maximum equipment height limit of 20 feet.

The Solution
CJGeo recommended polyurethane grouting using CJGrout 22SHV geotechnical polyurethane. Because the bridge was already in place, 22SHV's slow reaction profile would allow it to completely encapsulate each affected pier with the fewest holes. CJGeo mobilized a sonic drill rig with a 15' mast for the drilling, and installed eight bundles of polyurethane grout tubing to various points around each of the piles.
After all the tubing was in place, the crew performed the polyurethane compaction grouting over the course of a day. The project took 3600 pounds of 22SHV.
