The Job
This Washington DC polyurethane grouting job is in the Kalorama area. During construction of the building on the right side of the photo below, the SOE contractor put 17 soil nails through an egg-shaped brick sewer interceptor. This was discovered during video inspection after a backup affected the area. DC Water, owner of the line, utilized their on call CIPP contractor, Insituform, to cut the nails out and line the pipe.

The Challenge
Video inspection of the pipe showed significant voids outside of the brick structure. This was presumably from the original punctures, when soil was washed out by the nail grouting, and subsequently, due to the large holes in the pipe. In addition to removing the obstructions and lining the pipe, DC Water wanted to ensure stability of the area by addressing the voids. The pipes is roughly 15 feet below grade.

CJGeo worked with Insituform and DC Water to design a polyurethane grouting program to fill the voids. To avoid fouling the brick sewer, Insituform lined the pipe first. Then, CJGeo performed the polyurethane grouting. CJGeo used CJGrout 20SDB for the grouting work, due to the large size of voids, desire for maximum mobility, and minimize any pressures placed on the new lining by the grouting process.
A single polyurethane grouting crew successfully performed the work over two days onsite, with no disruptions to traffic or sewer operations.
