Marine Fills
Marine environments present unique geotechnical challenges, from high water tables and submerged void filling to weight restrictions on deteriorating waterfront structures. Marine fills utilize engineered low-density cellular concrete designed specifically to be placed directly into water, displacing the water while resisting washout and buoyancy. These advanced lightweight materials mitigate lateral and axial load stresses on critical aquatic infrastructure without requiring expensive mechanical dewatering.
Common Applications
Relieving Platforms & Piers
Replace heavy, saturated earth over aging timber or concrete relieving platforms to instantly reduce structural load and extend lifespan.
Seawall & Bulkhead Backfill
Backfills behind deteriorating or overstressed sheet pile walls to drastically reduce active earth pressures, preventing overturning and lateral displacement.
Underwater Void Filling
- Safely fills submerged scoured areas, marine cavities, or flooded subterranean structures without the material dissolving or washing away before curing.
Materials Used
CJFill® UW (Underwater)
A specialized, neat-cement low-density cellular concrete engineered with a wet-cast density just greater than water (typically 65–75 PCF). This precise density allows the highly fluid material to sink and naturally displace water during submerged placement without floating away, while still providing a massive weight reduction compared to traditional saturated fills.
CJFill® UW (Underwater)
For marine applications requiring higher unconfined compressive strengths or slightly heavier engineered densities, this sanded cellular concrete mix incorporates fine aggregates. It maintains the highly flowable, anti-washout characteristics necessary for stable underwater placement while satisfying rigorous structural bearing requirements.
The Technical Advantage
Polyurethane grouting excels compared to cement-based grouting primarily due to cleanliness, speed and control. These combine to reduce overall costs compared to cement-based grouting. Polyurethane grouting can be used in place of cement-based grouts. This includes for processes such as compaction grouting, slabjacking, void filling and leak sealing. Polyurethane grouting is…
Zero Lateral Fluid Pressure
Once cured, marine cellular concrete acts as a rigid, self-supporting mass that exerts zero lateral fluid pressure on adjacent sheet pile walls, bulkheads, and retaining structures.
No Compaction Required
Self-consolidating properties make it uniquely suited for submerged, inaccessible areas where mechanical compaction is impossible.
Long-Term Dimensional Stability
Cementitious mixtures will not degrade, dissolve, or break down when exposed to harsh marine environments, tidal fluctuations, or petroleum hydrocarbons.
