The Job
This New Jersey chemical grouting project by CJGeo is located in Elizabeth. Hurricane Sandy caused extensive damage to the JMEUC's Wastewater Treatment Plant. As part of extensive upgrades and flood protection, contractors are installing a new flood wall around the perimeter of the site. As an active site, there are extensive utilities crossing the flood wall alignment. At each utility, there is a gap in the sheet pile which has to be closed using chemical grouting.

Performing secondary grouting with acrylic grout.
The Challenge
CJGeo has performed extensive water control grouting on this site. Previous work focused on stopping tidal flows through the stone bedding of the 26' wide effluent box culvert. This phase of the project involved multiple crossings, ranging from 36" pipes to a double barrel box culvert. The purpose of the chemical grouting is to bind bedding stone and soils below the pipes and structures together, making them impermeable.
The Solution

Grout return during primary grouting.
CJGeo designed a grouting program specific to each of the individual gaps. For most, the primary grout is an expansive polyurethane grout. The secondary grout is an acrylic grout. The purpose of using two different grouts is to fill any bulk voids with polyurethane, which it is well suited for. This helps to ensure that the acrylic grout doesn't fracture into voids instead of seeping through the relatively dense, fine grain target soils.
Over a few mobilizations, CJGeo worked in very tight quarters between the existing structures and the new sheet piles to successfully perform the grouting.
