The Job
This Florida lightweight fill project took place in Hillsborough County, outside of Tampa. The county administers this local road reconstruction program.
Underlying compressible soils ("muck") caused pavement failure across a roughly 500-linear-foot area of Stafford Road. The geotechnical engineer determined that reducing the load on these underlying soils would significantly increase the life of the new pavement.

The Challenge
A few constraints drove the design. The lightweight fill needed to tolerate construction traffic for road base installation the day after placement. The equipment needed to be mobile to avoid disrupting access to adjacent homes. Finally, the lightweight fill material needed to be as light as possible.
The Solution
Working within these constraints, CJGeo proposed 30lb/cuft CJFill-Ultra Lightweight cellular concrete, with a minimum 28 day compressive strength of 120psi. At a 2.5' thickness, this reduced enough load off of the underlying compressible soils to help ensure long term pavement life.
CJGeo mobilized a dry batch plant to the site, which generated and placed the material over two days onsite. The top was stepped in 6" steps to accommodate the sloped profile of the roadway. Because CJGeo's dry batch plants utilize high energy mixing, the paving contractor was able to begin pavement construction the following day.
