The Job

This New Jersey lightweight fill project is located at the Oliver on the Hudson residential development.  The project is located next to the Port Liberte ferry terminal.

The Challenge

The project’s extensive geotechnical investigation determined that there were extensive compressible soils onsite.  They were too deep to economically remove and replace.  So, the designer called for installing ground improvement in order to provide adequate bearing capacity across the site.  However, due to flood resiliency concerns, the site grade needed to be built up significantly in order to provide a sustainable structure.  Using traditional unit weight fills would have caused more than desired settlement.

The Solution

Working with the geotechnical EOR, structural EOR & general contractor, CJGeo proposed an approximately 2′ thick layer of permeable, 25lb/cuft CJFill-Ultra Lightweight fill.  This reduced about 200PSF off of the load from the grade increase, which kept anticipated settlement within tolerance.

CJGeo mobilized a dry batch cellular grout plant to the site, and made around 200 cubic yards per hour of CJFill-Ultra Lightweight.  Due to the fast set of CJGeo’s CJFill-UL material, plumbers were able to utilize mini excavators and hand tools to install gravity drains in the layer of CJFill-UL the next day after each pour.
