Underground Structure & Mine Fills

Leaving subterranean structures, storage tanks, and abandoned mines empty introduces several risks including groundwater infiltration, sinkholes, and future settlement. Traditional aggregate backfills are incredibly difficult to place in these confined spaces, frequently leaving hidden voids and requiring heavy equipment. Utilizing advanced lightweight materials, like low-density cellular concrete and structural polyurethanes, ensures a complete abandonment that fits any shape and safely supports future surface development.

Common Applications

Basement, Vault & Crawlspace Abandonments

Pump high-volume cellular concrete for mass fills or inject ultra-lightweight polyurethane for confined, weight-restricted underground structures. A combination of cellular concrete and polyurethane grouts can be utilized to abandon structures fully and cap with an impermeable vapor barrier.

Underground Tank Fills

Rapidly decommission fuel, chemical, and water tanks to prevent future structural collapse. Both cellular concrete and expansive polyurethanes can be utilized to completely fill tanks from the surface without inducing more load than the structure’s original capacity.

Abandoned Mines

Stabilize inaccessible mine networks to prevent surface subsidence by abandoning them in place with highly-flowable cellular concrete. Geotechnical polyurethanes can also be injected to stop high-flow leaks into mines that would otherwise trigger surface collapse.

Related Materials

CJFill® Low-Density Cellular Concrete

Acting as a highly flowable, self-leveling liquid, CJFill® effortlessly conforms to any shape. It can be pumped up to a mile from a single injection point at exceptionally low backpressures, efficiently filling massive subterranean volumes like large basements and commercial tanks while eliminating the risk of material separation, settlement, or compaction.
