Clearwater Thermal Grouting

The Job

This thermal grouting project is located near Clearwater, Florida. It involves a 150-linear-foot, 48-inch diameter microtunnel crossing an arterial highway. This microtunnel is one of three on an underground transmission upgrade project.  Duke Energy is the owner of the project, which runs through a dense urban area near the St Pete/Clearwater airport.

The Challenge

This project was faced with the common thermal grouting challenges:

  • minimal water content, but maximum flowability
  • strength requirements, but minimal heat of hydration
  • high thermal conductivity, but low placement pressure limits

The Solution

CJGeo proposed our CJTherm TM-5 thermal grout mix.  This material met all of the project’s strength, flowability, heat of hydration and thermal conductivity.  CJGeo mobilized a crew to the site, who performed the grouting in a single day onsite.  Continuous temperature & pressure monitoring was done using in-tunnel piezometers, monitored live over the cloud by CJGeo’s engineering team.
